1989 CONCACAF Championship qualification

A total of 16 CONCACAF teams entered the competition. However, FIFA rejected the entry of fb|BLZ due to debts to FIFA.

There would be two rounds of play:
*First Round: Canada, Honduras, El Salvador, USA and Mexico, the five best ranked teams according to FIFA, received byes and advanced to the Second Round directly. The remaining 10 teams were paired up to play knockout matches on a home-and-away basis. The winners would advance to the Second Round.
*Second Round: The 10 teams were paired up to play knockout matches on a home-and-away basis. The winners would advance to the tournament.

May 8, 1988, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago - fb|TRI 1 - 0 fb-rt|GUY

"Trinidad and Tobago" advanced to the Second Round by the aggregate score of 5-0.

April 30, 1988, Havana, Cuba - fb|CUB 0 - 1 fb-rt|GUA

May 15, 1988, San Marcos, Guatemala - fb|GUA 1 - 1 fb-rt|CUB

"Guatemala" advanced to the Second Round by the aggregate score of 2-1.

May 12, 1988, Kingston, Jamaica - fb|JAM 1 - 0 fb-rt|PUR

May 29, 1988, San Juan, Puerto Rico - fb|PUR 1 - 2 fb-rt|JAM

"Jamaica" advanced to the Second Round by the aggregate score of 3-1.

June 19, 1988, St. John's, Antigua & Barbuda - fb|ATG 0 - 1 fb-rt|ANT

July 29, 1988, Willemstad, Netherlands Antilles - fb|ANT 3 - 1 (aet) fb-rt|ATG

"Netherlands Antilles" advanced to the Second Round by the aggregate score of 4-1.

July 17, 1988, San José, Costa Rica - fb|CRC 1 - 1 fb-rt|PAN

July 31, 1988, Panama City, Panama - fb|PAN 0 - 2 fb-rt|CRC

"Costa Rica" advanced to the Second Round by the aggregate score of 3-1.

CONCACAF Second Round

July 24, 1988, Kingston, Jamaica - fb|JAM 0 - 0 fb-rt|USA

August 13, 1988, Saint Louis, USA - fb|USA 5 - 1 fb-rt|JAM

"United States" advanced to the Final Round by the tournament score of 5-1.

October 9, 1988, Guatemala City, Guatemala - fb|GUA 1 - 0 fb-rt|CAN

October 15, 1988, Vancouver, Canada - fb|CAN 3 - 2 fb-rt|GUA

The aggregate score was tied 3-3, and "Guatemala" advanced to the tournament due to the away goals rule.

October 30, 1988, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago - fb|TRI 0 - 0 fb-rt|HON

November 13, 1988, Tegucigalpa, Honduras - fb|HON 1 - 1 fb-rt|TRI

The aggregate score was tied 1-1, and "Trinidad and Tobago" advanced to the tournament due to the away goals rule.

October 1, 1988, Willemstad, Netherlands Antilles - fb|ANT 0 - 1 fb-rt|SLV

October 16, 1988, San Salvador, El Salvador - fb|SLV 5 - 1 fb-rt|ANT

"El Salvador" advanced to the tournament by the aggregate score of 6-1.

fb|MEX was disqualified for fielding over-aged players in a youth tournament, so "fb|CRC" advanced to the tournament automatically.
