June 8 ,1787 -November 2 ,1868 ) was a U.S. Representative fromNew York .Born in
Richmond, Massachusetts , Betts was graduated fromWilliams College in 1806.He studied law inHudson, New York .He was admitted to the bar in 1807 and commenced practice inMonticello, New York .He served as judge advocate of Volunteers in the War of 1812.Betts was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Fourteenth Congress (
March 4 ,1815 -March 3 ,1817 ).He was not a candidate for renomination in 1816.He moved toNewburgh, New York , where he continued the practice of law.He was appointed circuit judge under the new State constitution in 1823.He was appointed and subsequently elected judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and served from 1826 until 1867, when he resigned.He died inNew Haven, Connecticut ,November 2 ,1868 .He was interred in Woodlawn Cemetery inNew York City .References
