Josiah Sutherland

Josiah Sutherland (June 12, 1804 - May 25, 1887) was a U.S. Representative from New York.

Born in the township of Stanford, near the village of Stissing, New York, Sutherland attended the district school, and was graduated from Union College, Schenectady, New York, in 1824.He studied law in Waterford and Hudson.He was admitted to the bar in 1828 and commenced practice in the village of Johnstown, Livingston Township, New York.He served as district attorney for Columbia County 1832-1843.He moved to Hudson, New York, in 1838 and continued the practice of law.

Sutherland was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress (March 4, 1851-March 3, 1853).He was not a candidate for renomination.He moved to New York City in 1857 and continued the practice of law.He served as associate justice of the supreme court of New York 1857-1871.He served as member and presiding judge of the court of general sessions 1872-1878.He resumed the practice of law in New York City and died there May 25, 1887.He was interred in Woodlawn Cemetery.
