Freeborn Garrettson Jewett (
August 4 ,1791 Sharon, Connecticut -January 27 ,1858 Skaneateles,Onondaga County, New York ) was an American lawyer and politician who served as a U.S. Representative fromNew York and was Chief Judge of theNew York Court of Appeals .He moved to
Skaneateles, New York in 1815, and was appointed aJustice of the Peace in 1817. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1818 and commenced practice in Skaneateles.From 1824 to 1831 he wasSurrogate ofOnondaga County, New York . He was as member of theNew York State Assembly in 1826. Jewett was elected as aJacksonian to the Twenty-second Congress and served fromMarch 4 ,1831 toMarch 3 ,1833 . He was inspector of Auburn Prison in 1838 and 1839, and district attorney for Onondaga County in 1839.He was appointed an associate justice of theNew York State Supreme Court onMarch 5 ,1845 . Jewett was elected one of the first judges of theNew York State Court of Appeals on its constitution in 1847. He was reelected in 1849 and served until June 1853, when he resigned on account of ill health. He served asChief Judge of the court from 1847 to 1850. He was buried at the Lake View Cemetery in Skaneateles.ource
