ROWE

ROWE

ROWE, or Results-Only Work Environment, (also known as Results Oriented Work Environment), is a management strategy created by [http://www.culturerx.com CultureRx] and pioneered by Best Buy. The work model differs from many work environments in that work is measured by results (output) rather than the number hours worked. The goal is to retain workers who deliver results while turning over employees who are not productive.

Pros:
*Very flexible work hours allow for personal events and activities to be done during what would be "core work hours" for many 8 - 5 employees
*Higher employee satisfaction
*Emphasis on bottom line results

Cons:
*Output measurement is harder for some jobs (overhead jobs in particular) than others
*Management can be challenging
*Some people have a harder time working with people without face-to-face interaction
*Can be destructive for individuals that don't have the discipline to hold themselves accountable for what they should work on. The ROWE definition is "each person is free to do whatever they want, whenever they want as long as the work gets done". Fundamentally it means owning your own calendar. If you job responsibilities can be completed without being in the office, you do not need to be. However if you do need to be in the office, it is your responsibility to react to that. ROWE works very well with competent individuals who have the self-discipline to get their work done.
