St. Patricks Old Cathedral School

Saint Patrick's Old Cathedral School is a Catholic K–8 school located in Manhattan, New York. It is one of the oldest schools in the Archdiocese of New York and in the city of New York as well.

History

St. Patrick Old Cathedral School on Mott Street in New York's Little Italy is New York's first and oldest parochial school. Founded by the Sisters of Charity as its first mission in New York in 1822, the school was the site in which St. Elizabeth Ann Seton sent three Sisters to care for the orphans in her native city. That orphanage gave birth to the school, which has served each generation of New York's immigrant communities. The Sisters of Charity are an integral part of "The Heart of Old New York" and St. Patrick Old Cathedral School.

The history of St. Patrick Old Cathedral School mirrors the history of New York City. Beginning in 1822 with the education of the city's Irish, French, and German communities, the school has served successive generations of immigrant children as they began their lives in the new world. Today, St. Patrick Old Cathedral School serves children from many races and ethnic communities. School notices are routinely printed in English, Spanish, and Chinese. The common thread among over 90% of students is that they come from economically challenged families whose incomes fall well below the national poverty level.

Today, St. Patrick's educates over 200 students in grades pre-kindergarten through eight, Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
