Dangerball

Dangerball is a ball game, the object of which is to keep the ball in the air. It is similar to Keepie uppie, Kemari, and Hacky slap, except that the ball is normally struck with the hands only. Any type of ball may be used to play the game, though a footbag or any other soft ball with a diameter approximating 10-15cm is often favored.

Dangerball is a cooperative game played by a single team of two or more persons. It is fairly unique amongst ball games in that it is not competitive and has no winners or losers. Players may keep count of the number of 'hits' the ball receives before it falls to the ground and then attempt to beat this score, but this is not a necessary element of the game.

Rules of Dangerball

As Dangerball is an informal game, the rules are generally considered flexible. An exception is that, during the game, all players must remain seated. However, leaping to reach the ball is permitted. Dangerball is normally played indoors. Players must attempt to hit the ball into the air and towards another player using their hands. If the ball cannot be reached with the hands it is acceptable to use one's feet instead. When a player receives the ball, their 'turn' is said to begin; when they hit the ball to another player, their 'turn' is said to end. Players attempt to hit the ball only once during each turn, though a player is permitted to hit the ball more than once if their first hit was intended to keep the ball in play after a poorly aimed hit by the previous player. However, it is not usual for more than two hits to be made in a turn, it being considered preferable to pass the ball onto the next player as quickly as possible. The ball need not be passed between players in any particular order. Whenever a player misses the ball and allows it to hit the floor, play simply restarts.

Origins of Dangerball

The origins of the game are unknown, but Dangerball is popular amongst students and may have first been played in college or university student houses. The danger in the name refers to the fact that, when the game is played indoors, the likelihood of ornaments being broken during play is high.
