The Eritrea national football team, nicknamed the "Red Sea Boys", is the national team of Eritrea and is controlled by the Eritrean National Football Federation which was founded in 1996. A member of CAF, it is one of its newest teams having affliated in 1998 with CAF and FIFA.

History

Eritrea's first participation in a major qualifying series was in the 2000 African Nations Cup qualifiers. They have been consistent participants in Nations Cup and World Cup qualifying series since.

The 2008 African Nations Cup qualifiers saw Eritrea finish second in their group, defeating Kenya twice and gaining a home draw with Angola.

Eritrea has participated in FIFA World Cup qualifying tournaments twice. In the qualifying competition for Korea/Japan 2002 they were drawn against Nigeria, and were defeated 4-0 in the away leg, after a goalless draw at home.

For Germany 2006 they were drawn against Sudan and lost the first leg 3-0, before another goalless draw in Asmara.

For Ghana 2008, under the guidance of Romanian Dorian Marin, Eritrea finished second behind Angola, failing to qualify for the final tournament.
