Charlie Wallace

Charlie Wallace

Charlie Wallace (born January 20, 1885) is a former English footballer who played for Aston Villa, Crystal Palace F.C. and Oldham Athletic A.F.C..

Wallace was in fact the first ever player to miss a penalty in an FA Cup Final when he missed the target from the spot in 1913 against Sunderland at London's Crystal Palace. A penalty miss would not occur again in FA Cup Final until the 1988 final between Wimbledon and Liverpool when John Aldridge of Liverpool had his penalty saved by Dave Beasant. The only other player to ever miss the target from the spot in an FA Cup Final is that of Frank Lampard of Chelsea F.C. when he missed with his penalty in the 2010 final against Portsmouth F.C.

Villa still went on to win the 1913 FA Cup Final 1-0 against Sunderland despite Wallace's penalty miss. Villa's goal that day came from Tommy Barber courtesy of a Wallace assist from a corner kick.

Wallace was also capped 3 times for England, making his debut on 17th March 1913 in a 4-3 victory against Wales at Ashton Gate watched by 8000 people. He went on to gain his second cap in a 3-0 defeat to Ireland at Ayrsome Park on 14th February 1914 in front of 25,000 spectators. His final cap for England came in a famous 5-4 victory against Scotland in front of 40,000 at Hillsborough on 10th April 1920.

Wallace retired from playing in 1923 before going on to manage Aston Villa's junior team and also spend time as a dressing room attendant and steward at Villa Park. Wallace's honours included a League Title in 1910 and two FA Cup Winner's medals in 1913 and 1920.
