BlueMotion

BlueMotion

BlueMotion is a trade name (developed externally by Origin Brand Consultants [http://www.originbranding.com/case_studies/consumer/pdfs/vw_bluemotion.pdf] ) for fuel-efficient automobile models from the Volkswagen Group.

Volkswagen introduced the name in 2006 on the Polo BlueMotion, and in 2007 a version based on the current Passat was released. More recently, the technology has been used in the SEAT Ibiza under the name Ecomotive. BlueMotion versions of the Golf and Touran are planned for 2008. The BlueMotion Golf will come in one of two trims; S or Match. The name refers to VW's corporate colour, blue, and echoes DaimlerChrysler's BlueTec.

The BlueMotion Polo and Ibiza Ecomotive use a special 1.4 L Diesel engine which achieves 3.9 L/100 km (72.4 imperial MPG, 60.3 US MPG) while producing just 99 grams of CO2 per kilometre. Both figures beat the hybrid Toyota Prius.

The BlueMotion Golf uses a more powerful, though less economic, 1.9 L Diesel engine, achieving a more modest 62.8 imperial MPG.

BlueMotion strategy

BlueMotion Volkswagens use existing technology to improve on the standard engine/vehicle.

Currently VW focus in three areas of improvement.

AerodynamicsOn the Polo, Golf and Passat, VW have lowered the suspension, redesigned the spoilers and performed additional enhancements underneath each car so the air is channelled better giving less resistance to the air stream which produces better fuel consumption.

TransmissionOn the Polo, Golf and Passat the last two gear ratios are longer than standard TDIs.

EngineRemapping of the engine and Diesel Particulate Filters help the fuel consumption and lower NOx levels.

Awards

In 2008 two cars from the BlueMotion were nominated for the [http://www.whatgreencar.com WhatGreenCar.com] Car of the Year Awards 2008 the UK's leading Green Car Awards. The VW Polo BlueMotion and the VW Golf BlueMotion both made it onto the short list.
