Georgian State University of Subtropical Agriculture

The Georgian State University of Subtropical Agriculture was established on January 26, 1952 in Kutaisi, Georgia.In 1959, the university was relocated to Sukhumi and became the international and educational center of Subtropical Zone.

Many scientific novelties have been elaborated and implanted in university. In faculty of Subtropical Agriculture created the cold-resistant kind of lemon “Dioskuria’’ and the authors deserved the state premiums.In the Department of Mechanization the mobile tea picking machine “Sakartvelo” was implanted, which selects and picks tea leaves.The faculty members also created special tools, machines and apparatus, which are necessary for Agricultural Mechanization, in difficult relief plantation.

In the Department of Technology, professors and teachers are working to improve the quality of Georgian tea. They have elaborated and implanted the new technological ways and methods of processing tea leaves, such as: Infra-red radiation, high-frequency heating and processing by ozone, also technology receiving solvent tea.The character of tobacco “Samsuni” also has been studied and the modern technologies were elaborated to make it by special machines and apparatus.

In 1993, after the military conflict in Abkhazia, the University returned to Kutaisi.Nowadays, 1362 students, aspirants and undergraduates are enrolled in the University. The total number of faculty members is 234.

The University includes two departments:

#Faculty of Subtropical Agriculture, Economics and Tourism, with its specialties:
#*Agro technology;
#*Agro ecology;
#*The Plant’s Selection and Genetics;
#*The Farming of Forest and Garden;
#*Economics and management of Agribusiness;
#*Tourism and Resort Service.
#Mechanization of Subtropical Cultures and Technology, with its specialties:
#*Mechanization of Agriculture;
#*Transport Organization in Agriculture;
#*Service of Agricultural Technique;
#*Food Technology;
#*Biological Technology;
#*Food products examination.

The University has scientific library with about 23.000 books (without Sukhumi scientific library, which consists of more than 1.000.000 books) and the newspaper “Alioni’’.

In spite of many difficulties The University has successfully passed accreditation process.The University has close scientific and educational contacts with many universities from various countries, including Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran.The well-known figures of the University were: Prof. PH. Mamporia; Prof. G. Goletiani; Acad. SH. Kereselidze; Acad. M. Mchedlidze and others. Rector of the University since 2005 is Prof. Nugzar Ebanoidze.
