Robert Newell

Robert Newell VC (1835- 11 July 1858) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

On 19 March 1858, during the Indian Rebellion of 1857-1858 at Lucknow, India he rescued a comrade whose horse had fallen, and took him to safety under heavy fire from a large number of the enemy for which he was awarded the VC. Private Newell was approximately 23 years old, and a Private in the 9th Lancers of the British Army. He was killed in action four months later in India, on 11 July 1858.
