Nee Foundation

Nee Foundation

The David Dawes Nee II Foundation (also known as the Nee Foundation) is a non-profit corporation that seeks to support and encourage organizations devoted to preventing suicide among adolescents and young adults through diagnosis, treatment, education, and research.

History

In June 2005, David Nee, a young law student who had faced depression for years, took his own life. In 2006, Dave's friends and family members started the Nee Foundation in memory of him.

Mission

The Nee Foundation's stated mission is "to eliminate the stigma associated with depression and suicide, by promoting and encouraging not only the diagnosis and treatment of depression among adolescents and young adults, but also the education of adolescents and their families about the disease of depression." According to the Foundation, "a principal reason for the high suicide rate in the United States is a glaring lack of sufficient candid discussion and early treatment for depression. Further, suffering adolescents are not aware of the available options for treatment and recovery." [http://www.daveneefoundation.org/About_the_Foundation.html]

The Foundation seeks to encourage the message that depression and thoughts of harming oneself do not make one 'abnormal,' that treatment for depressed and suicidal thoughts is socially acceptable, and that in an overwhelming number of cases, such treatment is a safe, effective way to improve one's quality of life.

Programs

The Nee Foundation hosts a variety of fundraising events to raise money for grants to other non-profit organizations that dedicate their efforts to the research and treatment of depression and suicide prevention for adolescents. As its working capital grows, the Foundation intends to develop programs that will aim to educate adolescents and their families about depression, suicide, and their treatments.

The Foundation's inaugural event [http://web.mac.com/mjkaufman/iWeb/David%20Dawes%20Nee%20II%20Foundation/DDNIIF%20Inaugural%20Fundraiser.html] was an auction that took place on November 11, 2006, and raised money for Columbia University's TeenScreen program, a national mental health and suicide risk screening program.

The Foundation is currently planning two fundraising events scheduled to take place in 2007.
