For the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington metropolitan area, see Delaware Valley."The Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area or Lower Cape Fear, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of three counties in southeastern North Carolina, anchored by the city of Wilmington. As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 274,532 (though a July 1, 2007 estimate placed the population at 339,511). Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 274,532 people, 114,675 households, and 75,347 families residing within the MSA. The racial makeup of the MSA was 79.47% White, 17.27% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.12% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.45% of the population.

The median income for a household in the MSA was $37,321, and the median income for a family was $44,844. Males had a median income of $32,454 versus $22,998 for females. The per capita income for the MSA was $20,287.
