John Turner is Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Portsmouth. [http://www.port.ac.uk]

John Turner graduated from Reading University in 1977 with a degree in Physics & Mathematics. He then underwent an engineering conversion by means of a two-year Graduate Apprenticeship at Hawker-Siddeley Aviation. His subsequent experience included the development of instrumentation for archaeologists at the British Museum, research into wind turbines, and methods of condition monitoring for road bridges at Reading University.

In 1985 he moved to Southampton University as Ford Lecturer, and subsequently became Ford Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department, specialising in automotive control systems. In 1993 he was awarded an EPSRC Research Chair in Automotive Engineering.

In 1997 Prof. Turner left Southampton and joined TRL Ltd. as Chief Scientist, with responsibility for research into road safety, environment, traffic and transport engineering. TRL is now a private company, but was originally a UK Ministry of Transport research laboratory known as TRRL.

John Turner moved to the University of Surrey in 2001, where he was Director of Research & Enterprise. In this post he was responsible for the University’s research strategy, consultancy activities, enterprise (spin-out and spin-in company formation), a new business incubator, the Teaching Company Scheme (TCS) Centre, and a range of Higher Education Initiative Fund (HEIF) and University Challenge (UC) activities.

In June 2003 he was appointed as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Science and the Built Environment at London South Bank University. He was responsible for a Faculty of over 300 staff, with an enrolment of around 3500 students.

In August 2006 Prof. Turner was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Portsmouth.

John Turner has four children; Jack, Gareth and Rosie from a first marriage, and Katie from a second marriage.
