Washington Street (Cork)

Washington Street (Cork)

Washington Street (Sráid Washington in Irish), is one of the mainstreets of Cork city, Ireland. Built in 1824, it was originally named "Great George's Street" in honour of King George. In 1918 the people of Cork renamed it, perhaps ironically as a tribute to George Washington. The street itself links the Western Road with the Grand Parade.

Notable buildings on Washington Street include the newly renovated Cork City courthouse and St. Augustine's Catholic church.

NightLife

Washington Street is the centre of much of Cork city's nightlife with many of Cork's most popular bars, nightclubs, and restaurants located on the street or close to it.
