Hippothous

Hippothous

In Greek mythology Hippothous is the name of seven men.

1. Hippothous son of Cercyon. He was one of the hunters of the Caledonian Boar. He later inherited the kingdom of Arcadia when king Agapenor did not return from the Trojan War. His successor was his son, Aepytus. [Pausanias, Description of Greece, 8.5.4 [http://www.theoi.com/Text/Pausanias8A.html] ] [Pausanias, Description of Greece, 8.45.6]

2. Hippothous, son of Lethus grandson of Pelasgus. He led the contingent of the Pelasgians during the Trojan War, along with his brother Pylaeus, and was killed by Ajax. [Homer, Iliad, 17.209 [http://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerIliad17.html] ] [Homer, Iliad, 17.288 [http://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerIliad17.html] ] [Homer, Iliad, 17.312 [http://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerIliad17.html] ] [Homer, Iliad, 2.840 [http://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerIliad2.html] ] [Apollodorus, The Library, E.3.35 [http://www.theoi.com/Text/ApollodorusE.html] ]

3. Hippothous, son of Neaera, daughter of Autolycus. He was killed by Telephus his kinsman (he was the son of Auge, another daughter of Autolycus). [Hyginus, Fabulae, 243 [http://www.theoi.com/Text/HyginusFabulae5.html] ] [Hyginus, Fabulae, 244 [http://www.theoi.com/Text/HyginusFabulae5.html] ]

4. Hippothous, son of Poseidon and Alope, daughter of Cercyon. He was exposed and suckled by animals, while his mother was executed. After Theseus had killed Cercyon he willingly handed over his kingdom to Hippothous, since both men were the sons of Poseidon.
