Bacillary Angiomatosis

Bacillary Angiomatosis

Bacillary angiomatosis is a systemic disease described by Stoler and associates in 1983. There are unusual cutaneous papules and nodules distinct from Kaposi sarcoma. Being unaware of its infectious origin, it was originally called "epithelioid angiomatosis".

Postmortem examinations showed nodules in the larynx, gastrointestinal tract, peritoneum, and diaphragm.

Causative agents

"Bartonella henselae" and "Bartonella quintana".

Treatment

BA often responds to therapy with oral erythromycin, tetracycline, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and rifampin.
