The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) sells study courses and examinations for personal trainer certification and funds fitness research and education. NASM was founded in Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1987. NASM develops continuing education in the form of study courses for professional athletic trainers. Topics that may be addressed in the various courses include human movement science or kinesiology, functional anatomy, physiology, as well as functional assessment and program design. The NASM website indicates that they provide strength and conditioning recommendations for professional sports teams and individual athletes including many NBA and football teams.

The NASM CEO is Dr. Micheal Clark, a researcher, educator and author who also serves as the physical therapist for the Phoenix Suns. NASM is now headquartered in Chandler, Arizona.

Certifications offered

The NASM CPT certification is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). NASM's examination-based health and fitness certifications include:

  • "Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) Certification" - Educational training program and certification for personal trainers focusing on movement science, exercise science, nutrition and behavior modification.
  • "Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) Advanced Specialization" - allows a practitioner to create individualized training programs to maximize athletic performance.[1]
  • "Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) Advanced Specialization" - focuses on the ability to work with musculoskeletal impairments, imbalances or post-rehabilitation concerns leading to pain and fatigue.

Related Certification for Athletic Training Students is provided by a former subsidiary, now an independent organization, Board of Certification, Inc.
