Gregory Stephen "Greg" Abbott (born December 14, 1963 in Coventry, England) is an English former footballer and is currently on the coaching staff at Carlisle United, where he also served a spell as caretaker manager. During his playing career, he played for Coventry City, Bradford City, Halifax Town and Hull City.

Playing career

Abbott started his career with Coventry City, first signing schoolboy forms, before becoming an apprentice in June 1980. He developed through the junior and reserve teams to sign a professional contract in January 1982 but at the end of the season he was given a free transfer without making a league appearance.cite book

] The youth development team at Coventry instead recommended Abbott to Bradford City, where he was given a trial in July, and then a one year's contract. He stayed on at City and won a Division Three championship medal in 1984–85 but the triumph was overshadowed by the Bradford fire. Abbott played in a number of positions including right back and central midfield and also scored a number of goals for City. Those goals included a hat-trick in a 3–1 win over Plymouth Argyle on 16 September 1987 as City went top of Division Two. They remained in the promotion chase throughout the season but missed out after a defeat in the final game of the season and then through the play-offs.

He remained at Bradford for another three years playing a total of 281 games, and scoring 38 goals, to join Halifax Town. He spent just one season at Halifax before teaming up with former manager Terry Dolan at Hull City. His playing career finished at non-league Guiseley.
