Saint Abban of New Ross (also known as Ewin, Abhan, or Evin; also Nevin, Neville, Stephan) ("fl." 550—650)cite web | title =Timeline of Monasterevin History | publisher =The Monasterevin Historical Society | date =2005 | url =http://www.kildare.ie/Monasterevin-Historical-Society/timeline.htm#Modern%20Era | accessdate =2007-03-18] was a contemporary and namesake of Saint Abban of Magheranoidhe. [CathEncy|url=http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01007a.htm|title=St. Abban of New Ross] He is also called Saint Abban of Murnevin [citeweb|title=St. Abban of Murnevin - Catholic Online|publisher=Catholic Online|date=2007|url=http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=562|accessdate=2007-09-08] .

Life

Abban was involved in the foundation of the abbey of Ros-mic-treoin (modern New Ross) and evangelized in the area of County Wexford, Ireland. He is also believed to have been the abbot of New Ross.

Conflation

Some writers have conflated him with Saint Evin of Rosglas, County Kildare. Even Colgan (followed by Dr. Lanigan) fell into the error of identifying "Rosglas" (Monasterevan) with "Ros-mic-treoin" (New Ross). The confusion here arose because Evin of Rosglas died on 22 December at Monaster Evin in County Kildare. However, Abban, that is, Evin of Ros-mic-treoin, died at Ross, County Wexford.
