The title Baron Selsey, of
Selsey , CountySussex , was created in thePeerage of Great Britain in 1794, for Sir James Peachey, Bt. who wasMaster of the Robes to King George III.The baronetcy had been created in 1736 for the first baron's uncle, with a special remainder to pass to the latter's brother and his descendants. Hence all the baronets were descendants of William Peachey of New Grove,
Petworth , West Sussex. William Peachey had three sons: Bulstrode, Henry and John. Bulstrode married his wife's surname as additional surname, and as Bulstrode Peachey Knight was elected as MP for Midhurst. Henry (1st Baronet) and John (2nd Baronet), and then John's son (3rd Baronet) who was also called John, succeeded Bulstrode as MP for Midhurst.Between 1738 and 1871 the Barons Selsey resided at West Dean House, in
West Dean, West Sussex , until Henry John Peachy died without an heir and the name became extinct. The house has now become a College dedicated to the arts.Both titles became extinct upon the death of the third baron in 1838.
