Phonology

In non-final positions, IPA|/u/ IPA|/o/, IPA|/i/, and IPA|/e/ are IPA| [ʊ] IPA| [ɔ] , IPA| [ɪ] , and IPA| [ɛ] , respectively. IPA| [ə] appears only in unstressed syllables; when it is followed by IPA|/w/ it is rounded: IPA| [ɵu̯] . [harvcoltxt|Laycock|1965|p=114]

Between vowels, IPA|/b/ and IPA|/g/ lenite to the fricatives IPA| [β] and IPA| [ɣ] , respectively. IPA|/s/ is realized as an affricate, IPA| [ts] , word-initially. IPA|/h/ is velar, IPA| [x] , after IPA|/a/ and IPA|/o/. Word-finally, voiceless stops are usually unreleased. [harvcoltxt|Laycock|1965|p=114]

Phonotactics

The consonant IPA|/ŋ/ only occurs finally. Bilabial and velar consonants may be followed by IPA|/w/ when initial, but otherwise consonant clusters only occur over syllable boundaries, with the exception of the unusual word IPA|/məmt/ ('snake'). [harvcoltxt|Laycock|1965|p=114]
