Before his
college football career, Barefoot starred atWest Jones High School inLaurel, Mississippi . He was Jones County's player of the year and an all-state selection asplacekicker in 2003. He also playedwide receiver .College career
In 2006, Barefoot became the team's starting punter as a
redshirt , adding that to his earlierkickoff duties. He averaged 38.6 yards per punt for the Golden Eagles (ironically, thealma mater ofRay Guy , one of the best ever in theNational Football League at that position). Barefoot made only one field goal in the season. His punting average improved to 42.5 yards per attempt, but he only had a 39.2 average in the Papajohns.com Bowl loss to Cincinnati.
