Father James Austin Whelihan (
April 6 ,1902 –November 15 ,1986 ) was a well knownpriest , best known for receiving theOrder of Canada in 1985.Biography
Born in
Lucan, Ontario , Father Whelihan studied at theUniversity of Western Ontario where he earned aBachelor of Arts with honours. He then joined theCongregation of St. Basil and became a priest onDecember 21 ,1930 . Father Whelihan taught in theUnited States andOntario before teaching atSt. Mary's University College, Calgary ,Alberta . He served as vice-principal, athletic coach and teacher. He later became the director of athletics for theCalgary Catholic School District . Father Whelihan died inToronto, Ontario at St. Michael's Hospital,November 15 ,1986 . He is buried at the St. Mary's Cemetery in Calgary, Alberta.Awards
