Neo-publicism

Neo-publicism

Neopublicism is an artistic movement which asserts that the press and publicity resulting from a real, or perceived, work of art is as much a part of the artwork as the artwork being reported on. It also asserts that the creator(s) of the press articles are the artists.

Neo-publicism was first coined in an article by Ralph Rugoff in Frieze Magazine [Frieze Magazine issue 42, 1998] entitled 'Yours Sincerly', which attributed the phrase to work exhibited at the Decima gallery in London and to The Leeds 13, among others.

Mark McGowan is another exponent of neo-publicism.

Exhibitions

In October 1998 Framed was the first ever exhibition of neo-publicist art; shown at the Decima gallery in London. It was curated by and featured Alex Chappel and David C. West.
