Sympathy for the Kettle, LLC

Sympathy for the Kettle was started in December 2003 in the East Village in New York City. The space was initially a dark and bankrupt Korean tea room. The proprietress or host, Jodi Holiday purchased the failing business, learned the art of tea from the previous tenants and transformed the space into an east meets west tea emporium. She was previously introduced to the world of tea by switching from strong European coffee to tea layered in dried fruits and herbswhile living in France and in Germany.

In addition to specializing in organic and Fair Trade teas, the company carries almost 200 different teas and herbs including tea from China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Rwanda, Indonesia and herbs from over 35 different countries.

Quintessentially, Sympathy for the Kettle over the years has been an introduction to the tea world for thousands of people. Sympathy for the Kettle believe premium tea should always be served on its own, no milk nor sugar needed, however for the novice tea drinkers, Sympathy for the Kettle offers a large variety of dessert and fruit teas aimed to please everyone especially those that thought they didn’t like tea.

Either extremely naive or uncannily insightful Sympathy for the Kettle's motto is save the world with tea. Which does seem a bit naive until you delve further into the company's short history by checking out their blog savetheworldwithtea.org or the website at sympathyforthekettle.com. They want to essentially heal society's ill's naturally with teas and herbs. They have been a significant part of their community in the last few years investing and donating to local and national organizations and charities.

The tea room located at 109 St. Marks Place is strategically named after a 1981 Rolling Stones video was filmed on the stoop.
