Institute of Emergency Management

Institute of Emergency Management

The Institute of Emergency Management (IEM) was incorporated as a registered charity (No. 1056265) in 1996 in the United Kingdom by professional emergency planners and managers who recognised the need to research and improve the response to major incidents and their immediate and long-term co-ordinated management. In so doing it was also aware of the necessity of promoting the education and training of key members of the emergency services and others, including the public, in the essential skills to deal with civil emergencies.

Since its formation the IEM has been actively involved in achieving these targets and has constantly pressed for high standards of professional practice at national and local levels as well as exchanging ideas and publication of information at international levels. As an Institute it has frequently been consulted for its professional views, comments and advice by the media, commercial, government and other bodies. Its work continues in these respects and its members actively participate in Conferences and seminars at international level on a wide range of subjects relevant to the management of major incidents.

The Institute holds an annual conference in March or April and has addressed issues from the 9/11 Emergency Response to how governments and emergency services would handle Avian Flu.

In 2005, The Institute agreed to form a sub speciality group called the Faculty of Health Emergency Planning as it was felt this area was specialised enough to benefit from a Faculty of its own.

Institute membership can be held in a number of different forms: Fellow (FIEM), Full Member (MIEM), Associate Member (AMIEM) or Student. Full Members and Fellows must hold either an academic degree of appropriate level in Emergency Management or have significant vocational experience in a relevant field of Emergency Service. Associate Membership and Student membership are granted to individuals who are studying or recently graduated in relevant subjects but have not yet gained enough experience to qualify for Full membership.

Post-nominals are granted to individuals who have qualified or demonstrated suitable knowledge of Emergency Management to be recognised by the Institute.
