Ohio Senate , representing the 32nd District since her appointment in 2006. In addition, Cafaro is currently the Assistant Minority Whip for the Senate.Cafaro comes from a wealthy family whose fortune derives from the shopping center business. She earned a bachelor of arts degree with honors in American studies from
Stanford University , and later earned a master's degree in international relations fromGeorgetown University . Two years later, Cafaro founded her own public relations firm that concentrated on not-for-profit clients.While in the master's degree program, Cafaro worked as a U.S. Senate staffer for U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), and U.S. Sen.
Al D'Amato (R-N.Y.). She worked in the areas of health care, education and Social Security.2004 Election
Cafaro, a political novice, won a surprise victory in the 2004 Democratic primary for
Ohio's 14th congressional district , topping a five-candidate field, which included 2002 nomineeDale V. Blanchard , columnistHerb Hammer , U.S. MarineCharles L. Wolfe , and Ohio state Rep. Edward Jerse (who received the endorsement of the "Akron Beacon Journal " newspaper). Cafaro polled 54 percent of the vote, while Jerse, the second-place finisher, managed only 19 percent. Cafaro ran for the Democratic nomination in the open 13th Congressional District in 2006, placing second in a nine-candidate primary. That seat was vacated by U.S. Representative
Sherrod Brown , Democrat who replaced RepublicanSenator Mike DeWine in the U.S. Senate after defeating him on November 7, 2006.Cafaro was appointed to the 32nd District of the
