DISCOP, originally founded in 1991 started as an audiovisual television content market for Eastern Europe. With the fall of the USSR, many countries went through a process of liberalization. The post-USSR transition period saw an bourgeoning media sector where content was needed but a structure was not in place to facilitate the growth. The DISCOP market (the name DISCOP originating from the two words: Discounted DISCO- and Programs -P ) was organized as a place for representatives of the audiovisual industry in Eastern Europe to be able to access discounted programs, where the prices to buy program rights where more in line with the capacity of the economies in the region.

With the same concept, establishing an audiovisual market in world regions where there are development possibilities for the audiovisual sector, an annual DISCOP television market was launched in 2009 for Sub-Saharan Africa. A new DISCOP market targeting the Broader Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia is also in progress and will have its inaugural edition March 2011 in Istanbul.

The idea behind the market is to facilitate business between buyers and sellers of audiovisual content. In additional there are informative training session such as DISCOPRO (a coproduction seminar) as well as social networking event during and outside of business hours of the three day events.
