List of Ergo Proxy characters

List of Ergo Proxy characters

This is a list of characters that appear in the Japanese anime series "Ergo Proxy".

Principal characters

* Vincent Law:An immigrant from Mosko working for Romdo's nihongo|AutoReiv Control Division|オートレイブ処理課 within the nihongo|Temporary Immigrant Sector FG|暫定移民区域FG, set up to hunt and depose infected AutoReivs. His eyes often looks like they are closed; almost like slits. Vincent appears driven to become a Modal Citizen, but ultimately fails to suppress the burden of his traumatic past and flees from Romdo. He has a romantic interest in Re-l Mayer.

* Re-l Mayer:Embodiment of the no-nonsense personality, 19-year old (as shown on her profile shown in episode 7) Inspector Re-l Mayer of the nihongo|Citizen Intelligence Bureau|市民情報局|Shimin Jōhōkyoku is in charge of investigating a series of brutal murders apparently committed by AutoReivs infected with the Cogito Virus. She is also the granddaughter of Donov Mayer, the Regent of Romdo. Given her privileged status, she expects respect from people around her, and speaks as such (she addresses Vincent as "o-mae"). Re-l accompanies Vincent on his journey in order to learn more about the mysterious Proxies, but having been living in comfortable conditions and being spoilt by Iggy all her life, she finds the "outdoor hiking" experience increasingly unbearable, and throws tantrums at both of them (often with comical effects). During the period that they get stranded without wind, she passes time by taking the both of them as study subjects. Her narration reveals her to be a very analytical person. Re-l is a young woman who wears black clothes, has black hair and is known for her blue eyeshadow. She eventually comes to share Vincent's feelings, but shows it subtly.

* Pino:An infected Companion AutoReiv with a bubbly personality, she was owned by Raul Creed and Samantha Ross, Pino served as a surrogate child to the couple (in fact, in episode 19, everyone in the smile land gets so shocked that she is able to smile so "naturally", which is reasonable since she is "infected" with a soul. With the humanity within her, she then proceeds, under the request of all the friends she made in Smile Land, to save Smile Land from impending destruction upon Vincent's arrival). She was scheduled for decommissioning after the Creeds were granted a real baby son by the government, but the untimely deaths of Samantha and her new son prompted Pino to flee Romdo. Although she seems to be the AutoReiv that closely resembles a human child full of curiosity, it is ironic that she starts off without a clue about human death, nor understand that the emotion she feels right then is called loneliness (She knows that Timothy has died, but wonders if there is another Timothy to play with her). She becomes very attached to Vincent and accompanies him on his journey; she calls him "Vince" and occasionally throws her "tantrums" at him. Unlike most AutoReivs who live to serve their masters, Pino seems to be unable to do the simplest thing, for comical effects (such as when Vincent asks her to collect firewood in episode 13, she initially comes back with disgusting-looking mushrooms; she also makes a disgusting-looking concoction of canned food in episode 14 and serves it to Re-l and Vincent) She also initially thinks that Re-l is a "scary lady"; after getting used to her presence, Pino starts calling her "Re-l Re-l". She also has the knack of imitating people for what they do, and imitates them well (such as Timothy's drawings; Re-l and Vincent's expressions; and much to Re-l's displeasure, the exact way and manner by which Re-l complains and reprimands Vincent). Pino's most common antics involve her dressing in a pink rabbit costume and playing a large toy melodica.

Recurring characters

* Iggy:An Entourage AutoReiv belonging to Re-l Mayer, Iggy contracted the Cogito Virus and grew to become enraged at Re-l's lack of regard for him. He despises Proxies and blames Vincent for taking Re-l - his sole Raison d'Être - away from him. He develops an unusual state of both loving and hating Re-l, and locks her up to "protect" her, while he attempts to kill Vincent. However, an AutoReiv belonging to a Proxy Re-l killed attempts to kill Re-l at the same time, causing Iggy to return to Re-l. The AutoReiv goes into a self-detonation mode and destroyed much of Iggy except for part of his head (which left Iggy "in agony" to some extent). In the end, not wanting to see Iggy suffer due to the virus, Re-l shoots him in his head.

* Raul Creed:The newly appointed Director-General of the nihongo|Citizen Security Bureau|市民警備局|Shimin Keibikyoku, who reports directly to the Regent. He and his wife took Pino as a surrogate child prior to the beginning of the series. Initially loyal to the system, he comes to despise the ruling order responsible for the city's slow decay and lashes out destructively. His mentality also slowly degenerates, as he frequently has hallucinations of a smirking Vincent Law close by. He is quite skilled and accurate with a pistol (as shown in the beginning scenes of episode 17). He eventually ends up wounded (Due to being somehow stabbed by the fake Real, as her hands are covered in blood during a wash in the sink) and goes in search for Pino, his only surviving loved one, but dies in his search, knocked over by an AutoReiv onto a shard of glass and impaled. He dies from his wounds but is found by Kristeva.

* Kristeva:Raul Creed's Entourage AutoReiv, Kristeva carries out her duties to Raul loyally. She later takes up the role of being Pino's guardian, per Raul's request.

* Daedalus Yumeno:Chief physician leading the Proxy Research Team, Director of the nihongo|Division of Health and Welfare|厚生局|Kōseikyoku, and Re-l Mayer's personal physician. Daedalus displays a strange obsession in Re-l Mayer. He has two Entourages, Deleuze and Guattari. In the final episodes, Daedalus has been revealed to have created a fake Re-l as a replacement and gives her wings. It is unclear whether the fake is an AutoReiv or a clone created in the WombSys. He also has shown that he is cracked mentally and that he no longer cares what happens to the world. The fake Re-l is taken over by Monad, and leaves. Daedalus, concluding that Re-l has always left him behind, is crushed by falling rubble. He survives long enough to witness his clone Re-l be incinerated by sunlight and dies. (Another possibility behind the fake Re-l is that she may have been a part of Project ADW and was created using Monad's Amrita cells. This could have led to a rebirth or cloning of Monad similar to Proxy One's creation of Vincent Law.)

* Donov MayerBerkeley: anime voices|Yū Shimaka|Doug Stone
Derrida: anime voices|Yoko Sōmi|Melodee Spevack
Husserl: anime voices|Hidekatsu Shibata|Michael McConnohie
Lacan: anime voices|Atsuko Tanaka|Barbara Goodson:The elderly debilitated nihongo|Regent|執国|shikkoku (also nihongo|representative|代表|daihyō) of Romdo City. He speaks by proxy through the voices of 4 Entourages in the form of stone statues (called, as a group, the Council, the nihongo|Collective|総体|Sōtai and the nihongo|Administration Bureau|管理局|Kanrikyoku) named after famous philosophers: Derrida, Lacan, Husserl and Berkeley. These AutoReivs appear as Michelangelo's statues from the Medici Chapel, two resting on either side of Donov's chamber. Donov is Re-l's grandfather. He is murdered in Episode 22 by Proxy 1, and his Entourage presumably perish when his house collapses.
