James French Strother (
September 4 ,1811 –September 20 ,1860 ) was a nineteenth centuryAmerican politician andlawyer fromVirginia . He was the son ofGeorge Strother and grandfather of another namedJames French Strother .Born in
Culpeper County, Virginia , Strother completed preparatory studies and attendedSt. Louis University inSt. Louis, Missouri . He studied law and was admitted to the bar, commencing practice inWashington, Virginia . He became a member of theVirginia House of Delegates in 1840, serving until 1851 and was Speaker of the House in his last year. Strother was also a delegate to the Virginia Constitutional Convention in 1850 and was elected a Whig to theUnited States House of Representatives in that same year, serving from 1851 to 1853. Afterwards, he resumed practicing law inCulpeper, Virginia until his death near there onSeptember 20 ,1860 . He was interned in Masonic Cemetery.References
