Grootebroek

Grootebroek is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is located in the municipality of Stede Broec.

Grootebroek was a separate municipality until 1979. [Ad van der Meer and Onno Boonstra, "Repertorium van Nederlandse gemeenten", KNAW, 2006. [http://www.knaw.nl/cfdata/publicaties/detail.cfm?boeken__ordernr=20061061] ] To understand why the town is called Grootebroek you first nead to know the meaning of the word. "Groote" is Dutch for "big". The next part of the word is "broek". In these days "broek" is Dutch for "pants" but some centuries ago it was Dutch for "swamp". So that makes it "Bigswamp". Before the town existed there were 2 swamps a litte one (placed were now is what called Lutjebroek)and a big one which is now Grootebroek.
