Opportunities in Emergency Care (OEC) is a program offered at Osseo Senior High School, in Osseo, Minnesota, and Spring Lake Park High School, in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota. It offers high school students the opportunity to earn certifications in BLS Provider CPR, First Responder, CPR Instructor and as NREMT-certified Emergency Medical Technicians.
The two programs run joint events such as Fall and Spring Camps and State EMT Competition.
Demographics
OEC draws students from local schools in and out of their districts. Most classes are taken by juniors and seniors, while some classes are offered to freshmen and sophomores at Spring Lake Park. Students come with a variety of interests. Most are interested in a career in health care or emergency services.
Osseo class times
At Osseo, classes are offered three times a day: 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Students from other schools or districts can attend any of the classes.
Spring Lake Park class times
At Spring Lake Park, classes are offered twice a day, one from 7:25 to 9:03 (1st and 2nd periods), and during the 5th and 6th hours of Spring Lake Park's schedule. If a student is not from Spring Lake Park, they are most likely to be placed in the morning class.
Equipment
OEC utilizes the most common and modern EMS equipment available. Every team has their own stretcher, trauma pack, Oxygen Kit (includes full tank, assorted masks, tubing, etc.), blanket, AED-trainer (Automated external defibrillator), backboard and splints. Each is also responsible for maintaining his equipment.
