Zavoloka is a contemporary experimental music and electronic music composer, sound artist and graphic designer from Kyiv city, in Ukraine. Real name is Kateryna Zavoloka. She was born in 1981 in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Word "zavoloka" means "deep fog" and also "maverick" in Ukrainian language. Zavoloka's main interest in music is to mix ancient times, Ukrainian traditions with high modern electronic music technology, to experiment with it. She combine melodic experimental electronic music with recorded herself old folk songs, that common people singing at country-side in Ukraine. In 2003 label Nexsound released her first release "Suspenzia", that was the most frequently downloaded Mp3 piece. At the end of 2003 the CDr "I" appeared on the American label "Zeromoon".

Her full-length CD "Plavyna" appeared at the beginning of 2005 under the Austrian label "Laton" and under Ukrainian label "Nexsound". The CD was highly acclaimed and took a Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica in 2005.

In June 2007, in #280 The Wire (magazine) there was an article about Zavoloka, also one collaborative track with Kotra appeared at Wire Tapper 16 and Zavoloka's track from Viter on Wire Tapper 20.

In 2007 Zavoloka has released "Viter" CD on label Kvitnu, first from seria of albums dedicated to Elements of Air, Water, Earth and Fire and inspired by Book of Veles.

In 2008 Zavoloka Kateryna has received "Gaude Polonia" grant, hosted by National Centre for Culture, Ministry of Culture in Poland and worked at the Electroacoustic Studio in Cracow Music Academy.

Zavoloka is a main graphic designer for label Kvitnu, Detali Zvuku festival and Kvitnu Fest.

Collaborations

*Kotra - Ukrainian musician, sound artist, runner of label Kvitnu, Kvitnu Fest and Detali Zvuku festival. Kotra & Zavoloka had several releases and "Wag the Swing" CD, released on Ukrainian label "Kvitnu" in 2006 and performing live together. Also their track appeared at Wire Tapper 16.

* Mark Clifford - (from Seefeel, label Polyfusia, Warp records) musician from United Kingdom. In 2007 they released "Split01" CD ep on Polyfusia records.

*AGF - a.k.a Antye Greie, German poetess and musician. In 2006 they released the full-length CD "Nature never produces the same beat twice" on "Nexsound" and performed live together on different festivals around Europe

* Laetitia Morais - visual artist from Portugal. Laetitia Morais made a video, for Zavoloka's "Exhale" track from "Viter" album.

*Anders Dahl - Swedish musician from label Hapna. Zavoloka and Anders Dahl participated in SWIZHE project, hosted by Swedish Institute in 2006-2007.

*Katya Chilly - Ukrainian vocalist. Result of collaboration - several live concerts and music for a "Krashen vechir" video.

* Zavoloka also takes part in the international Border Crossing Art Project MOVE with:

Johannes Burstrom (Sweden) - musician, bassist, sound artist and web designer, Tobias Leira (Norway) - lighting designer and video artist, Charlotta Ruth (Sweden) and Alexandr Andriyashkin (Russia) - contemporary choreographers and dancers.

Live performance

Zavoloka usually perform live and already played on different international festivals around Europe, Asia and Ukraine, like: Presences Electronique (Groupe de Recherches Musicales, INA-GRM), club transmediale, Kvitnu Fest, Detali Zvuku festival, Being the future, Les Urbaines, Stimul, Garage, Unsound, Femmes, Cimatics, Interferenze, Radius, La Nuit Blue, EME07, AudioVisiva and many others.
