Judo

1997 World Championships bronze medalist Victor Bivol started his Olympic tournament strongly, beating his first three opponents in a combined 4:15 to reach the semifinals. In the semifinal, though, he fell to the eventual gold medalist from Korea in less than two minutes. In the bronze medal match, Bivol did not give up a score of ippon, but did surrender two lesser waza-ari scores to lose the match.

Weightlifting

Alexandru Bratan missed his last two lifts in the 105 kg class, both of which would have moved him into third place, and ended up settling for losing the fourth place tiebreaker due to bodyweight. However, when second place finisher Ferenc Gyurkovics failed a doping test, this body weight tiebreaker was enough to prevent Bratan from claiming a medal by just one hundred grams.
