Lenoir Chambers

Lenoir Chambers (1891-1970) was a writer, biographer and newspaper editor. In 1960, as editor of The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Virginia (now owned by Landmark Communications), he won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing for his series of editorials on desegregation and the school integration problem in Virginia. He was elected to the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame in 1991.

Mr. Chambers was also the author of two books: "Stonewall Jackson" (1959), a two-volume biography of the Civil War general, and "Salt Water & Printer's Ink: Norfolk and Its Newspapers" (1967), a history of the newspaper industry in Norfolk. "Stonewall Jackson" was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1960.

As a young man in World War I, he served in 52nd Infantry, Sixth Division, American Expeditionary Forces.
