Jorge Oñate born March 31, 1949 in the town of Los Robles La Paz, near the city of Valledupar in northern Colombia, is one of the most renown singers and composers of the vallenato musical genre. As of 2004 and since the beginning of his career in 1968 he has achieved 25 gold discs, 7 platinum discs and 6 double platinum for his sales, among other numerous musical accomplishments. Biography

Early years

Oñate grew up in the small town of La Paz 15 minutes away from Valledupar where he studied until graduating from high school, he was known for having a great aptitud for singing vallenatos. He was also a football player and loved the game, during his childhood he had the opportunity to play with many people that later became professional players. 1960s

In 1968 after High School, Oñate gets hired by a local vallenato group called "Los Guatapuri" as the lead singer and officially starting his career as vallenato singer. The group released an album titled Festival Vallenato recording the songs; "Campesina Vallenata", "El hijo de mi ahijada", "Sombra Vengadora", "Marina", "El diablo de San Diego", "Lavandera", "La negrita de ají", "Advertencia", "Luisa Fernanda", "Canto optimista", "María Eugenia" and "Fabiola".

In 1969, Oñate teams up with the already locally famous Hermanos Lopez vallenato group once again as lead singer releasing the album Lo Último en Vallenatos! with the songs; "Berta Caldera", "Recuerdos", "Diciembre Alegre", "Vámonos Compañera", "Secreto Raro", "Gallo Viejo", "Mis Viejos", "Siniestro de Ovejas", "La Paz", "Me Quisiste y Me Olvidaste", "Ligia" and "Mi Morenita".

1970s

In 1970 Oñate releases his second album with the Hermanos Lopez titled Diosa Divina with the songs; "Diosa divina","Dina López", "Triste Recuerdo", "Porque Eres Así", "Sueño Vallenato", "Gratitud", "Serenata Vallenata", "Amor de Callejera", "Recordándote", "Amor a Dos Manos", "Los Tiempos Cambian" and "Barranquillera". this year he also recorded an album separately with accordion player Nelson Diaz, titled Conmigo es el Baile with the songs; "Ojitos Claros", "Panderitos Parrandero", "San Jacinto", "La Vieja", "Amor San Juanero", "Diciembre Alegre", "Ya Viene la Cumbia", "Don Ramón", "El Toro Prieto", "La Sabrosa", "Vámonos Compañera" and "La Mica Rosa".

In 1971 Oñate and the Hermanos Lopez recorded the album El Jardincito which contained the songs; "Amor Sensible" by Fredy Molina, "Déjame gozar" by José Vicente Muniver, "Flor de Durania" by Luciano Goyo, "Mi Gran Amigo" by Camilo Namen, "Campesino" by Poncho Zuleta, "Jenny" by José Vicente Muniver, "Que Dolor" by Luís Martinez, "Querer o Aborrecer" by Enrique Calderón, "Amor de Quinceañera" by Jorge Oñate, "El Jardincito" by Hugo Araujo, "Fuente Cristalina" by Efraín Gutiérrez and "El Colibrí" by Luciano Goyo. In 1972 they released the album Reyes Vallenatos which included the songs, "Recordando mi Niñez" by Camilo Namen, "Soy Estudiante" by Elver Araujo, "Preguntas y Respuestas" by Armando Zabaleta, "Estelita Gonzáles" by Poncho Zuleta, "La Casita" by Nicolás Maestre, "Mujeres que me Dejaron" by Máximo Movil, "Tiempos de la Cometa" by Fredy Molina, "Bajo el Palo de Mango by Leandro Díaz, "El Cambio" by Emiro Zuleta, "El puente de Maríangola" by Luciano Gullo, "Amparito" by Hugo Araujo, and "La Vieja Gabriela" by Juan Muñoz. In 1973 released the album El Cantor de Fonseca with the songs; "El Cantor de Fonseca" by Carlos Huertas, "El contrabandista", by Sergio Moya, "Palabras al Viento" by Santander Durán, "El Compadre" by Luciano Guyo, "Si la Vieras" by Urbano Díaz, "Los Tres Hermanos" by Tobías Enrique Pumarejo, "No voy a Patillal" by Armando Zabaleta, "No te Vayas" by Julio Oñate Martínez, "Razón y Olvido" by Emiro Zuleta, "Hermosos Tiempos by Carlos Huertas, "Mi Huerto" by Máximo Movil and "Despedida al Festival" by Luís Francisco Medoza. This same year the group releases a second album named Las Bodas de Plata which included the songs; "Las Bodas de Plata" by Armando Zabaleta, "El Libre" by Camilo Namen, "La Niña Educada" by Hugo Araujo, "Corazón Vallenato" by Emiro Zuleta, "Saludo Cordial" by Luis Enrique Martínez, "Si Hay Cara Sucias" by an author that reserved the right, "Carmen Gómez" by Rafael Escalona, "La Margentina" by Julio De La Rosa, "Pensando en Ti" by Armando Zabaleta, "Mi Canto Sentimental" by Poncho Zuleta, "Toda Mujer No Es Igual" by Leandro Díaz and "La Cordobesa" by Luis Enrique Martínez.

In 1974 they recorded another two albums, the first one Fuera de Concurso contains the songs; "La Loma" by Samuel Martínez, "Dos Rosas" by Fredy Molina, "A Través de los Años" by Emiro Zuleta, "Mala Suerte" by Rafael Escalona, "Amor Ardiente" by Emiro Zuleta, "Días del Ayer" by Alberto Murgas, "Aracataca Espera" Armando Zabaleta, "El Historiador" by Raúl Garrido, "El Compadre Tomás" by Rafael Escalona, "Adiós Amor" by Emiro Zuleta, "El Compositor" by Sergio Moya Molina and "Desde la Capital" by Emiro Zuleta. The second one was named Rosa Jardinera with the songs; "Rosa Jardinera" by Idelfonso Ramírez, "Secretos del Alma" by Sergio Moya Molina, "La Muchachita" by Alejo Durán, "Entre Placeres y Penas" by Emiro Zuleta, "Dos Papeles" by Oscar Díaz, "Inquietud" by Gustavo Gutierrez, "Patillalero de Cepa" by Edilberto Daza, "Las Bananeras" by Lorenzo Morales, "La Primavera Florecida" by Lorenzo Morales, "Dubis Caballero" by Enrique Calderón, "Marula" by Enrique Zequeira and "Cristina" by composer Freddy Molina.

2000s

Oñate is currently performing with one of the youngest and best accordionist in Colombia Christian Camilo Peña] with only 21 years old he has already achieved a crown of king in the Vallenato Legend Festival celebrated every year in Valledupar, they had recorded 3 albums together: "Seguire Triunfando (2004)", "Vivo Cantando (2005)" and "Mi Mejor Regalo (2006)".

Family

Oñate is son of Daniel Gonzalez and Delfina Oñate and is the yougest of three siblings. He married Nancy Zuleta and had three children with her; Jorge Luis, Delfina Ines and Jorge Daniel.
