Port Ramsgate

Port Ramsgate

.

History

The construction of Ramsgate Harbour began in 1749 and was completed in about 1850. The Harbour has the unique distinction of being the only Royal Harbour in the United Kingdom. Because of its proximity to mainland Europe, Ramsgate was a chief embarkation point both during the Napoleonic Wars and for the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940.The ferry terminal area is built upon reclaimed land.

Passenger and freight services

Port Ramsgate has provided cross channel ferries for many years. Previously Sally Ferries provided a service of passenger and car ferries to Dunkirk. Currently a service of predominantly freight is provided to Oostende by Transeuropa Ferries. Passenger services are only available with vehicles. Ramsgate port has has its own access tunnel avoiding town centre congestion.

Ramsgate Marina

The 700-berth Royal Harbour Marina is also a frequently used destination for yachts from The Netherlands as the route forms the shortest crossing from The Netherlands via Flushing

Lifeboat

The RNLI Ramsgate Lifeboat Station is based in Port Ramsgate.

Wind Projects
