Francis White (Bishop)

Francis White (Bishop)

Francis White (c. 1564 – 1638) was an English bishop. He was the brother of John White, chaplain to James I. He was educated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he graduated BA in 1583, MA in 1586 and DD in 1618. He was appointed Dean of Carlisle Cathedral in 1622 (and was at the same time Senior Dean of Sion College, London from 1625), and was given the bishopric itself in 1626. In 1629 he was translated to Norwich, and in 1631 to Ely, where he stayed until his death. He published a number of controversial religious treatises.

Among the many, the bishop ordained Ralph Wheelock, the teacher of the first free school in New England, on 6 May 1630.
