Naval Academy Mürwik

The Naval Academy Mürwik (Marineschule Mürwik), located at Flensburg-Mürwik in Schleswig-Holstein Germany, is the educational and training establishment for officers entering the German Navy.

The one-year lasting basic education of all German Navy's cadets basically consists of four parts: Being new in the German Navy, all cadets first perform six weeks of collective basic training at Mürwik. After this they are divided in three groups which will consecutively take part in three sections of training: A sailing trip with German Navy's training ship Gorch Fock (1958), a mission-preparing part at the "NCO's school" (Marineunteroffizierschule/MUS) in Plön and the officer's training again at Mürwik. Cadets who will serve at the German forces' medical service only take part in the first trip with Gorch Fock and the six weeks basic training.

History

Established at this site by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1910, the academy occupies some of the original red brick buildings built between 1907 and 1910.

In 1945, Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz, who was briefly President of Germany for ten days after Adolf Hitler had appointed him his successor and then committed suicide, fled to Flensburg with what was left of his government where they were arrested and unseated at the Naval Academy Mürwik by British troops. Flensburg and the Naval Academy were thereby, for a few weeks, very briefly the last seat of the Third Reich's government and also Germany's capital.
