Whitney Wolverine

Whitney Wolverine

The Whitney Wolverine was an advanced, "space-aged", light-weight aluminum, semi-automatic, .22 LR calibre pistol created in 1956. It had a 10 round magazine, and weighed only 1.3 lbs.

History

The Wolverine was engineered by Robert Hillberg, who learned about aluminum during WWII while working with aircraft guns and later became research engineer for High Standard Gun Company. Only 13,000 of these pistols were made in its short period of production and of these only 900 were silver anodized the rest were painted black, the grips came in either a black or white plastic with the frame being cast by Alcoa and the name "Wolverine" being named after Mr. Hillberg's favorite football team, the University of Michigan Wolverines. A victim of poor marketing, the Whitney Wolverine was way ahead of its time with its very unique space-age design.

The original retail price was $39.95.

The Modern Wolverine

Two companies have attempted to revive the Wolverine design. Olympic Arms manufactures and sells a version which is a polymer frame, instead of aluminum like the originals. Samson Manufacturing Corp. has planned on creating their own version, but it is not yet in production.
