Dr. Lazar Mathew, a specialist in Health Technology and Environmental Health, is currently the Advisor, Medical Sciences, Engineering & Technology, PSG Institute of Advanced Studies, Coimbatore.

History

Dr. Mathew obtained a Bachelors of Veterinary Science degree from Kerala Veterinary College, Mannuthy in 1964, a Master of Science degree in Medical Physiology from the University of Mysore, and a Ph.D. (Medical Physiology) from Delhi University. Till recently, Dr.T. Lazar Mathew has been the Director, Sponsored Research and also the Director of School of Bio Sciences & Technology in VIT University, managing over 3000 UG, PG and Doctoral Students pursuing studies in 12 different programmes in the fields of Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Genetics and various branches of Health Sciences; having the strength of 129 well-qualified and experienced faculty.Several funding projects over Rs. 4 crores from different agencies like DRDO, DBT, DST and from private organizations have been sanctioned to him and his group.

Recently he has initiated Indo-Singapore Networking Project on Health systems research called SIGNET. He has conceptualized the Indian Medical Devices Regulatory Authority (IMDRA) and has served as the Chairman of the Task Force to implement it in India.

Previously he has worked as Director of Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences, Delhi,[1] and also as the Chief Executive of the Society for Biomedical Technology. He has been the Director of Defence Bio Engineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL), a prestigious DRDO Institute at Bangalore and Director of Life Sciences in DRDO. After his retirement, he served as Director of St. Francis Hospital, Ajmer; thus holding Director’s position for more than 24 years.

Currently, he is Chairman of Biomedical Engineering Committee of DST; Chairman of Expert group on Medical Electronics & Telemedicine” of Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and Chairman of BioMEMS group of National Programme on Micro and Smart System; an inter ministerial initiative of Science Departments of Govt. of India.

His doctorate is on Medical Physiology from University of Delhi and has about 45 years of experience in teaching, research and administration. He has 195 publications (96 research papers, 17 patents) and nine technical books to his credit, and received 16 awards, including the Scientist of the Year Award of DRDO. He has been a member of various scientific committees, such as UGC, ICMR, DST, DRDO and INSA and also been secretary, vice president and member of five science associations and Sectional President for Indian Science Congress. He is a visiting Professor for a University in France.

He is a Fellow of the Academy of Biomedical Scientists (FABMS), International Medical Sciences Academy(FIMSA) and Indian Medical Sciences Academy(FAMS). He has been a member of selection boards for the post of directors, professors and scientists of DST, DRDO, AIIMS and a few universities in India and served as referee for evaluation of scientific papers in five scientific journals. He is a post-graduate teacher, research guide and examiner for M. Sc, M. Tech and Ph. D programmes of University of Mysore, University of Bangalore, University of Delhi, University of Calcutta, IIT-Delhi, Bharathiar University and VIT University. He has been abroad representing DRDO on several occasions and continues to maintain international contacts specially to Canada, France, U.K and Singapore to tie up collaborative academic activities.
