500 cc race report

Cagiva sits out the last race. The grid is headed by Mick Doohan, Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Gardner and Eddie Lawson.

The start goes to the Rothmans Hondas, but by the hairpin Wayne Rainey is up to third. Exiting the hairpin, Gardner almost highsides, letting Rainey through.

Rainey takes the lead from Doohan, with Gardner making it a trio away at the front. Rainey gets passed by Doohan on the straight, but he re-takes the lead by barging through the inside on the hairpin again.

Doohan past on the straight again: the Yamaha seems out-matched on straight-line speed. The trio becomes a quartet as Schwantz catches up, having set the fastest lap of the race.

Gardner’s fairing is loose from his near-crash, but he manages to pass Rainey on the straight to take second spot, and again Rainey inelegantly pushes Gardner wide on the hairpin apex, which allows Schwantz into third.

With 7 laps to go, Doohan is at the front down the straight, Schwantz in second and Gardner back into third as he passes Rainey into Turn One. He then passes Schwantz before the hairpin.Gardner passes Doohan on Turn One, and Doohan nearly highsides through the right-hander as Schwantz closes the gap that had been forming and then goes on to pass him. Rainey is still in fourth place.

On the brakes into Turn One, Schwantz has a high-speed highside and crashes out of second. Gardner wins the race in front Doohan, with a small gap to Rainey in third.
