Floyd Central High School is a public high school of the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation and is located in Floyds Knobs, Indiana.

History

The school was built in 1967 and has had many expansions since then. The school was formerly called "Floyd Central Junior-Senior High School" until the opening of Highland Hills Middle School in 2004. Floyd Central High School is now in the beginning phases of a new construction project, which is projected to cost around $55.9 million dollars. The new construction is much needed because the classrooms are on average 150 square feet smaller than average classrooms. John Marsh won principal of the year in Indiana. Mr Struck was teacher of the year.

Athletics

Floyd Central has a rich history of great athletic achievements. Among the most decorated sports are wrestling, tennis, golf, dance team, and cross country. The wrestling team has won virtually every sectional and regional championship. The tennis team has gone to semi-state repeatedly but has failed to win the elusive state championship (8 final fours). In 2006 and 2007, the men's golf team took home back-to-back golf state titles. The dance team has won 12-plus UDA National Championships, including 10 consecutive titles. The team has been featured on ESPN six straight years. Since semi-state was part of the state tournament, the boys' team has made it to every event. The girls' team is even more decorated, with four state titles from 1989 through 1992. The Highlanders have won the last four sectional championships.

1989 Boys Basketball

During the 1988-89 basketball season, the Highlanders advanced to the state finals. They were led by 1989 Indiana Mr. Basketball Pat Graham. During the regular season, the Highlanders posted a 16-4 record with monumental games against Louisville Ballard (led by Alan Houston) and Bedford North Lawrence (led by Damon Bailey). The Final Four run included a 48-point game by Shane Gibson in the sectional final against Jeffersonville and an epic overtime battle during the Seymour Regional against the Bailey-led Bedford North Lawrence Stars, who would go on to win the 1990 state championship. The season ended with a 73-70 loss to Kokomo, which lost to eventual champion Lawrence North (led by Eric Montross, later to attend eventual NCAA champion North Carolina). Key note to the loss at State: Craig McCoy, the team's other power forward & starter on the team down in the paint, went out during the preseason. He tore an ACL in his knee during practice and could not play. Had he played, it could have meant the championship that year for the Highlanders.

Graham went on to experience an up-and-down career with the Indiana Hoosiers. He was considered one of the country's best three-point shooters but was often injured during his tenure at IU. Graham, however, was able to follow up his high school final four appearance with an NCAA Final Four appearance for the Hoosiers in 1992.
