Bailey college

Bailey college

The Bailey colleges are a group of colleges of Durham University that are located on the historic peninsula around North and South Bailey street. The colleges usually considered the Bailey Colleges are:
* University College
* Hatfield College
* St John's College
* St Cuthbert's Society; and
* St Chad's College

The Bailey colleges are much older than most of the Hill colleges. They are usually thought of as being more traditional and all require the wearing of gowns at either matriculation, JCR meetings or Formal meals, except the 'traditionally informal' St Cuthbert's Society. Two of the Bailey colleges, St Chad's College and St John's College, are independent self-governing colleges.

There is a general rivalry between the Hill colleges and the Bailey colleges [http://www.durhamstudent.co.uk/colleges/] which culminates in the "Hill versus Bailey" rugby match, which groups the College of St Hild and St Bede within the Bailey colleges and Queen's Campus colleges with the Hill, although neither are generally considered to be part of the groupings.
