Ysgol y Preseli

Ysgol y Preseli

Ysgol Y Preseli is a bilingual comprehensive 11-18 school situated in the village of Crymych, Pembrokeshire, Wales that teaches in both Welsh and English. It was declared an official bilingual school on 1 September 1991. Before this time it was called "Ysgol Gyfun Ddwyieithog y Preseli." The school's slogan is "Cofia Dysgu Byw", which translates from Welsh to "Remember to Learn to Live". The Headmaster is D. Martin Lloyd.

This school was recognized by the November 2002 school inspection as a 'good' school, point 2 on a five point scale. [ [http://www.estyn.gov.uk/inspection_reports/PreseliE.pdf School inspection report] , Estyn, November 2002]

According to the latest inspection report by Estyn the school had a GCSE pass rate of 72% (5 GCSEs, grades A-C), which puts it in the top 10% of secondary schools in Wales. In 2000 the school had a pass rate of 75% which meant it was ranked 7th in the principality. It is also the best performing secondary school in Pembrokeshire.

As a result of its success the school has seen continued growth in student numbers over the last decade. This is to a large extent due to the influx of pupils from the south of the county.

On 13 April 2006 Mathematics teacher Helen Bowen was suspended from the school for 'improving' GCSE coursework. She was later sacked and a General Teaching Council panel found her 'guilty of unacceptable professional conduct' and suspended her teaching licence for four years.
