Emily Thorn Vanderbilt

Emily Thorn Vanderbilt (1852 – 1946) was a member of the prominent United States Vanderbilt family.

The second daughter of William Henry Vanderbilt (1821 - 1885) and Maria Louisa Kissam (1821 - 1896), Emily Thorn Vanderbilt was named after her aunt, Emily Almira (Vanderbilt) Thorn, daughter of dynasty founder Cornelius Vanderbilt.

Marriages

She married William Douglas Sloane (1844 - 1913), and they had three daughters: Florence Adele Vanderbilt Sloane (1873 - 1960), Lila Vanderbilt Sloane and Emily Vanderbilt Sloane. On April 5, 1899 Emily married James Henry Hammond, son of General John Henry Hammond of Kentucky, and they had two children: Alice Frances Hammond and John Henry Hammond II. James Hammond was a brother of well-known politician Ogden Hammond of New Jersey.

Alice Hammond Duckworth married the jazz musician Benny Goodman on March 14, 1942.
