Rubye Robinson

Rubye Robinson

Rubye Robinson ("née" Rubye Doris Smith) (April 25 1942 – October 9 1967) was an American civil rights activist.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Smith entered Spelman College in 1959, where she began participating in non-violent sit-ins. She joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) by 1961. She was arrested in Rock Hill, South Carolina while protesting student arrests and later joined the Freedom Riders in Alabama.

In 1964 Smith married Clifford Robinson, and in 1966 she became SNCC's first female executive secretary. Robinson resigned from SNCC when diagnosed with leukemia and died in Atlanta shortly after.
