Charles E. Smith (engineer)

Charles E. Smith (engineer)

Dr. Charles E. Smith was professor and Chair in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Mississippi. His focus research areas included: application of electromagnetic theory to microwave circuits, application of numerical techniques to microstrip transmission lines, antenna measurements in lossy media, measurement of electrical properties of materials, and radar design.

Dr. Smith received the B.E.E., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama, in 1959, 1963, and 1968, respectively. He served the University of Mississippi as Chair of the Electrical Engineering department in its School of Engineering.

Personal

Charles E Smith, also known as Smitty, was born in Clayton, Alabama, on June 8, 1934. In October 2004 the University of Mississippi honored Dr. Smith by renaming the building where he conducted most of his research the Charles E. Smith Engineering Sciences Building. This was a result of a generous donation to the School of Engineering by Dr. Smith's three sons, Chuck (Charles Jr.) Smith, Steve Smith, and Gary Smith. - two of who were Electrical Engineering graduates during their father's tenure at Ole Miss. Dr. Smith died Thursday, May 12, 2005.
